Crusher Joe: The Movie (1983)

In the distant future, galactic hands-for-hire known as Crushers are frequently employed to handle the most rough-and-tumble jobs. Title character Joe is captain of the spacecraft Minerva and head of one of the most talented Crusher teams in the universe. So when he and his crew are suckered into participating in an illegal operation and have their Crusher licenses suspended as a result, they set off to clear their reputation by taking in the true culprits. Their search leads them to the lawless planet of Lagol, where they become involved in a conspiracy much deeper and more dangerous than they could have ever anticipated…

Based on a series of novels by Haruka Takachiho (Dirty Pair), directed by animator extraordinaire Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (Mobile Suit Gundam, Venus Wars) and featuring flawless mechanical designs by Shoji Kawamori (Macross, Transformers) Crusher Joe is a hard sci-fi action-adventure that is easy on the eyes. Ruthless crime syndicates, corrupt politicians, hazardous future technology and heated battles both in and out of space keep the narrative from losing momentum even as the film’s running time clocks in at over 2 hours.
